TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE FOR PREGNANCY

Congratulations! As many of us at Mend know first-hand, pregnancy is a pivot to a very colorful stage of life. Your responsibilities grow, but so does the fun!

Your first question may be: is it safe for me to get acupuncture right now? Happily, yes. In a 2014 review of research studies conducted on pregnant women, the most common but still infrequent side effect was soreness at the site of the needle insertion. (This can occur for any patient and typically ends in a few days.)

TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE FOR ACHES & PAINS

While prepping your home for the new arrival, you may encounter new aches and pains. Sleep can be affected by hip pain from sidelying. Sciatica and carpal tunnel can be common experience in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Happily, acupuncture has been shown to help with pelvic and low-back pain and produce minimal adverse effects. In fact, ear acupuncture has been shown to help with the same two conditions.

TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE FOR NAUSEA

As you shift your eating habits, you may still encounter stomach upset. Even as early as the second week in pregnancy, acupuncture may help pregnant women experiencing nausea and dry retching. One particularly well-known acupuncture point may be an “All-Star” for this condition. You can also ask us about Traditional Chinese Medicine dietary theory, which can aid your digestion and elimination at any life stage.

TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE FOR ANXIETY & DEPRESSION

Pregnancy is an intense and complex state: some of us feel complete and whole, while others feel on edge or markedly sad. Fortunately, acupuncture has been shown to help ease anxiety and reduce depression in pregnant women.

TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE FOR BREECH PRESENTATION

According to recent research, moxibustion and acupuncture may help change breech presentation of the fetus. Moxibustion involves the use of an herb, artemesia vulgaris (member of the chrysanthemum family), on or above acupuncture points.

TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE FOR PROLONGED LABOR

Acupuncture may also reduce pain experienced during labor as well as the overall delivery time, according to recent research.
